The Exuberant Douglas Darling

Mr. Doug Darling, Hair stylist extraordinaire!

I love this man so much!!  He is my longest standing weekly client, friend and of course part of the flower family.  Get this, we have been providing weekly flowers for 27 years!  And, he is one of the most exuberant people you will meet!!

He has been a hair dresser for 39 YEARS!!!! I know right?!

He is a very talented hair dresser for sure but I think maybe one of the reasons why people keep going back to him is he is SO FUNNY! The time people spend in his chair is probably the best part of of their month!

He is so popular that people call me all the time asking if they can get flowers in "Doug Darling Style".

Aside from our great friendship, having Doug as a client has been amazing because I have met so many clients and people through him! He really does have a a huge reach in Portland!

THANK YOU THANK YOU Doug for everything!  You are adored and loved by us!

Better Together... Actually Better with Larry Button!!

STORY TIME!!!

A few weeks ago we celebrated our 27th Flower Shop Birthday! We reminisced and thought about all the magic from the last 27 years and honestly it was such a blast and you all seemed to love it, right?

Since we had so much fun, we wanted to use this opportunity to share more stories!

We have the perfect place start... Larry Button! He is the perfect kick off to my story telling because in a way he was a big kick off for my business! Mr. Larry Button was the Catering Director at the Benson when I met him and let me tell you... he's a big deal! He has an old school service style that is rarely seen these days. He always answered the phone with "A Very Good Day to you, This is Larry Button of The Benson, how can I be at your service?" in the most soft, professional, service oriented tone. He seemed conservative but actually had a wild side and  loved punk rock music. He was known for taking a taxi to and from work each day and always had a soundtrack of train whistles playing in his office!

When I first moved into the U.S. Bancorp Tower I stared at the beautiful Benson Hotel everyday on my way to work. It's so magical, so classy and I had to find a way to get my flowers inside! So, I made a super special bouquet from my own personal garden using white garden roses and lavender and delivered them straight to Larry Button. And you guessed, Larry loved this quirky, young blonde flower girl from down the street and hired me, and my flowers have graced The Benson ever since!

My favorite story with Larry was when he called me at 5 pm in a panic, okay not a panic because Larry was very put together, but he had a flower emergency! He said I really need your help... Shaquille O'Neill (basketball superstar) and Al Gore (who was running for President at the time), are both at the hotel and they BOTH want the presidential suite, yikes! In additional to scrambling for Lava Cake and the best cut of steak for Mr. O'Neill, Larry called me up and said I need flowers for all of them stat!  So I whipped out flowers as fast as I could and rushed them over! This story is such a testament of Larry, an excellent problem solver!

In 2005, Larry had a pretty serious stroke. It took him many years to gain speech back, and even now he can only speak slowly, but he can sing! He actually worked in the flower shop on and off for about 6 years and would always sing "The Yellow Rose of Texas" to me!
Larry and his amazing wife Gretchen love to spend time at their home in Cannon Beach. Larry Button is a legacy in hospitality and at The Benson and for me personally, I love him to so much!

A Couture Estate Garden Wedding

If you have ever attended a wedding at Lewis & Clark College, you know how special it is!! This stunning couture estate garden campus will make you feel like you are exploring a Parisan estate or manor in the English countryside ! We are always giddy when we get to work here and it is truly amazing because they only allow weddings & events to happen here in the summertime, so it is really hard to get a spot! The remainder of the year they operate as a college campus, one of the most beautiful colleges ever, in my opinion!

If the photos below don't convince you that you should go take a walk around then I don't know what will!!

What is even better is when we get to work at the beautiful venue with a couple as marvelous as Sarah and Sam!!

Their wedding was a dream for many reasons but mostly because they are such a kind, loving couple, they have phenomenal taste and they know how to throw a party! Also, the details are exquisitely chosen... so look closely!

Take a glance below at their fabulous affair that we are still dreaming about 5 years later!

The Tenacious, NO BS, Samantha Martin

One of the biggest lessons I have learned from the pandemic is the power of slowing down. Because we are all forced to really shift and change our habits, I feel like in some ways this period is a blessing. It has given me the precious opportunity to really pause and reflect on what is really important. I have taught myself to shift and adjust bad habits and really to be more in the moment. I have let go of so many different kinds of clutter and am really thanking my lucky stars for what I have. I have the luxury of more time to make prettier things for you, to give back to the community in big ways and really honor all the people along the way. I know that was kind of wordy but we started a couple weeks back honoring really amazing and valuable people from my 27 years in business. We started with Larry Button from the Benson Hotel and then the wonderful Joan Shipley last week. Today we are featuring my former publicist and dear friend Samantha Martin from Media Maison. I know, I had two publicists and it is rare for businesses to have one let alone a florist from Portland, Oregon.

I first started with local media PR maven Bette Sinclair who really opened me up to local publicity and I will tell her story soon too. Bette really changed the way I thought about publicity and even having someone on your side. Then, 2008 happened and we had to part ways.

Several years later local writer and man about town Byron Beck introduced me to Samantha Martin. The thing about Sam is she is a FORCE and after one simple phone call I knew I wanted her by my side. She is tough, fiercely loyal and man oh man did she change the landscape for us!

We were immediately getting national exposure, sending flowers to celebrities, getting features in national bridal magazines, blogs and even was the florist for the coolest wedding reception hosted by SAS airlines featuring same sex weddings in the sky. Yep three international same sex couples got married in a SAS jet without the seats on a flight from Stockholm to JFK. That was fun!

But then shortly after that Sam started attracting higher profile clients because HEY she is the absolute best. I also think she invented the word tenacious. She worked securing press for Robert DeNiro and his lovely wife Grace Hightower and because hey she is Sam I was by her side.

Next up, I was on the TODAY show!!!! Yes that is correct she used her magic powers, skills and contacts to secure me a coveted spot on the flippin' TODAY show. I had a weeks notice to figure it out, write content and present 7 different ideas for florals for viewers to make at home for Valentine's Day for 7 parts of the county. She coached me (told me say the word amazing only 3 times and not 98 times), helped me be camera ready and talked me off the ledge. But, WE DID IT!

The best part is Sam pushed and challenged me to think big. She believes in me like nobody can and to this day is a dear friend! Need a push hire a publicist or better yet hire Sam!

The best thing about the Publicist-Client relationship is that is really all goes both ways! This is what Samantha has to say about our many adventures together, "I met Kim in Portland over 10 years ago when she became a client and then my dearest friend. Her talents and creativity are beyond words and so when I moved my firm to New York city - I still only used Kim for any event I designed. My clients would all ask - why not a NY based florist and I would reply - "Without Kim - it won't work....". Through every event we have worked on Kim never panics, is always in control and gets it done - ALWAYS. As a publicist who creates and manages very high profile events for celebrity clients, it is imperative that I have someone who can work under pressure and can take the "decor" piece from me. I know it will be not only beautiful and work with my "theme" but that I can manage the PR part of my job. The knowledge that I can walk into a room 5 minutes before start time and know Kim has managed to pull it all off without any input from me and it is perfect. THAT ease is invaluable and why I continue to use a Portland, Oregon florist and friend for any event I do around the country".

Throwback to the Stunning Larsson-Halverson Wedding of 2013!

If you have been following us, it is likely that you have heard us gush about how much we are loving the small, intimate weddings that the pandemic has made the norm. And it is so true.... we do! However, we do spend time day dreaming about some of the stunning, lavish weddings of the past!

Well we are here to bring you in on that day dream, so let's reflect together on the marvelous wedding of Anna & Spencer!

This wedding was so dreamy that we are still pinching ourselves even today for so many reasons.  Of course, the flowers, the incredible details, technical challenges (this was our first big "flower island") but hand's down it was the opportunity to work and guide this amazing, kind, gorgeous couple Anna & Spencer and their families!  The palette was the softest of blush and creams and of course lots of romantic blooms that included garden roses and peonies.  Please take a moment to enjoy this wedding and better yet we know we will be back celebrating soon!

More to come- We are launching our very own YouTube channel because Hey we have pent up creativity and we are bursting to share.  We start filming tomorrow and we will need your "Subscribes" and "likes" for sure!  Please feel to reach out to let us know how we are doing, what things you would love to see and of course everything in between!  Miss you and big hugs.

xoxo,

Kim and Team

The Wonderful Joan Shipley

Take a second.. close your eyes and think back to your childhood/young adult life. Now think of the people who helped shape you into who you are. Maybe a teacher, maybe a coach, maybe a close friend, maybe your parents?  For me, I remember lots of teachers but mostly, hands down, it was Joan Shipley.

I started working for Joan in the mid 80's while I was attending art school at Pacific NW college of art here in Portland, long before the flower shop was even a thought in my head. I would help her with little events in her home.  Joan was a cultural force, held prominent spots on many arts and educational boards and entertained like nobody could.

She was always the perfect host. She loved having people in her beautiful home and wanted to make sure people had the best time possible. She would fill her home with bounties of food and stunning looser garden styled floral arrangements, put together by me of course!  Her gatherings were always a cross section of intellectuals, artists, community leaders and family.  She was graceful, elegant, down to earth, curious and generous both as a person and an entertainer.  One particular big party for Trimet (I think it was) all the power went out in the house and we were right in the middle of making paella for 75 guests. We immediately thought to use the BBQ's and though it was a bit stressful by the end, it was the most delicious paella ever complete with smokey flavor.  Joan and I became a great team in the kitchen.

We both shared the love of good food but also of flowers.  Gardenias, lily of the valley, french double lilacs, peonies,  garden roses are a few of our favorites.  When she was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and requested no visitors I knew I had to do something.  So, I sent gardenias and even close to her passing she was still able to smell the heady gardenia scent.

She still inspires me to become a better person (even 30 years later), to  be graceful always, to give back to everyone I can and to lift people up.  She was also an amazing gift giver and always remembered every holidays and birthdays for me and also my children.

I have had the esteemed honor to help Joan celebrate some of the most special days in her life, not only events and dinner parties, but also her children's weddings, her sad passing in 2011 and this past weekend, her grandchildren's b'nei mitzvah. It really does come full circle doesn't it?

I miss Joan dearly everyday. I have never wanted to get a tattoo but if I got one it would either say  "WWJD" (What would Joan do?) or just simply "Joan knows".

Xoxo, Kim
